Sunday, November 2nd at 2 pm the Dundee Township Historical Society welcomes William Werst, Executive Director of the The 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train.
After President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, his body and that of his son Willie were returned to Illinois for burial in Springfield . The United States was a private railroad car for the President and was the equivalent of what we know today as Air Force One. The car was converted to serve as the funeral car. A group of dedicated individuals have been working to recreate the funeral car and its 12 day journey from Washington D.C. to Illinois.
The program will consist of the history of the Lincoln Train, the plans and progress of the recreation of the funeral car and its commemorative route beginning April 21, 2015-150 years to the day from when the original train started for Illinois in 1865.
This presentation at the Historical Society museum is open to the public. The museum is located at 426 Highland Ave. in West Dundee , 847-428-6996.
There is no admission fee. Donations are appreciated.
